Phil McIntyre
Director of Bands

C. Phillip McIntyre is a native of Greenville, South Carolina, and a 1973 graduate of Parker High School. While at Parker, Phil was under the guidance of his teacher, mentor, and friend, Mr. James B. Senn. Following his tenure at Parker, Phil attended Furman University as a student of Mr. Dan A. Ellis. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1977 and Masters of Arts in Education in 1982. In 1977 Phil was hired as Director of Bands at Blue Ridge High School where he served for six years. In 1982 Phil was named Teacher of the Year at Blue Ridge. In 1983 Mr. McIntyre became Director of Bands at James F. Byrnes High School, and in 1999 was named Teacher of the Year. In 1999 he was also awarded the Outstanding Bandmaster by Phi Beta Mu, and a Citation of Excellence by the National Band Association.

The Byrnes band program is a twenty-time recipient of the SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award. The symphonic bands under Mr. Mclntyre's direction have consistently been awarded superior ratings at the SCBDA Concert Band Festivals, and the marching band has won 9 state championships, 13 upper state championships, a BOA regional championship, 4 BOA regional class AA championships and countless other honors. In 1999 the symphonic band performed at the SCMEA In-Service Conference.

Mr. McIntyre is currently serving as president of the South Carolina Music Educators Association. 

He is also is a member of Phi Beta Mu, American School Band Directors Association, SCBDA, Phi Mu Alpha, SCMEA, MENC, and the Ruritan Club. He is also a member of the Lyman United Methodist Church. Phil has served SCBDA as President, Chairman of the Marching Committee for six years, and Chairman of the Adjudication Committee. Phil and his wife Wanda have been married for thirty-one years. They have two daughters, Alicia, who is an assistant band director at Chapman High School, and  Kelsey, a junior at James F. Byrnes High School.

In 1999, Mr. McIntyre was inducted into the SCBDA Hall of Fame.

Clark W. Murff
Asst. Director of Bands

Clark “Chuck” Murff is a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and a 1976 graduate of Spartanburg High School. He received his Bachelor of Music from Furman University in 1980 and his Masters in “Gifted” Education from Converse College in 1993.  Mr. Murff’s teaching assignments include Wade Hampton High School in Hampton, SC; Columbus Avenue Elementary School in Valhalla, New York; and Chesnee High School in Chesnee, SC.   He was hired as an Assistant Director of Bands at James F. Byrnes High School in 1999.  In 2003 he moved to Beech Springs Intermediate School

Mr. Murff is a member of Phi Mu Alpha and the SCBDA

Mr. Murff received a commission in the Army Reserve from Furman ROTC in 1980.  He currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the SC National Guard.  Chuck and his wife Sue have been married for twenty-five years. They have two daughters, Amber, who teaches 4th grade at Wood Elementary School in Lexington, SC and Beth who recently graduated from the USC Honors College.

Chris Moss
Asst. Director of Bands / Colorguard Director

Chris Moss is currently the assistant band director at James F. Byrnes High School where he serves as color guard caption supervisor and the director of the District Five Winter Guard Program.  Chris holds a Bachelors of Music Education Degree from the Florida State University.

Mr. Moss marched two years as a Euphonium with the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps and a year with both Paradigm Winter Guard in the Independent A class and Northeast Independent  Winter Guard in Independent World Class.  He has served as the color guard director at Byrnes for three years and during that time, the winter guard program has grown to four ensembles that regularly compete as part of the Carolina Indoor Performance Association. In addition, the Byrnes varsity winter guard, "Indigo," competes with Winter Guard International and is regularly a Scholastic A Regional Finalist.

Mr. Moss also has served as a member of the brass staff at Capital Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps and two years on the brass staff of the 2005 Drum Corps International World Champion and High Brass Champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. 

Craig Davis
Asst. Director of Bands

 

Craig Davis is the Director of Bands at Florence Chapel Middle School and an Assistant Director of Bands at James F. Byrnes High School.  Mr. Davis is from Lexington, SC and is a graduate of Lexington High School.  Mr. Davis was awarded a Bachelor's of Music from Furman University in 2002.  While a student at Furman, Mr. Davis studied music education under Dr. Leslie Hicken and trumpet under Dr. Gary Malvern.  He was the principal trumpet of the Furman Wind Ensemble, the Furman Symphonic Band, and the Furman Symphony Orchestra in 2002. 

In 2004, Mr. Davis received a Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of South Carolina.  During his time at USC, Mr. Davis served as a graduate assistant with the USC Band program where he assisted with the Carolina Marching Band, conducted the University Band, and studied conducting with Dr. William Moody.


Mr. Davis is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Music Educators National Conference (MENC), South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA), The Palmetto Concert Band, and Pi Kappa Lambda.  Mr. Davis lives in Greer, South Carolina wit
h his wife, Jessica. 

Jessica Davis
Asst. Director of Bands

Jessica Davis is the Director of Bands at Berry Shoals Intermediate School and the Assistant Director of Bands at James F. Byrnes High School.  Mrs. Davis is from Goose Creek, SC and is a graduate of Stratford High School.  Mrs. Davis received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Furman University in 2003.  While a student at Furman, Mrs. Davis studied music education under Dr. Leslie Hicken and clarinet under Dr. Robert Chesebro.  She was the principal clarinet of the Furman Wind Ensemble, the Furman Symphonic Band, and the Furman Symphony Orchestra in 2002-2003.  She was featured on the 2002 Spring Honors Recital and was a featured clarinet soloist with the Furman University Symphony Orchestra in 2003. 

In 2005, Mrs. Davis received a Master’s Degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of South Carolina.  During her time at USC, Mrs. Davis studied clarinet under Mr. Douglas Graham and was the principal clarinet of the Symphonic Band under Mr. James Copenhaver and was the principal clarinet of the Symphony Orchestra under Dr. Donald Portnoy. 

Mrs. Davis has performed with the Spartanburg Philharmonic and the Greenville Symphony Orchestra.  Mrs. Davis is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA), International Clarinet Assocation (ICA), World Klarinette Alliance (WKA), The Palmetto Concert Band, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Eta Sigma.  Mrs. Davis lives in Greer, SC with her husband, Craig. 

Dan S. Sears
Asst. Director of Bands

Dan Sears is currently in his tenth year of teaching in Spartanburg School District Five.  During the past three years he has been the Director of Bands at D. R. Hill Middle School.  Prior to his tenure at D. R. Hill, he taught at Beech Springs Intermediate School and Berry Shoals Intermediate School.  While at Beech Springs, the Honor Band was the first Intermediate School to receive the SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award, in 2000.  Before his arrival in District Five, Sears completed his Masters of Music Education at the University of South Carolina. 

Some of his duties include assisting with the James F. Byrnes High School Marching Band and directing the Byrnes Honor Jazz Ensemble. The Byrnes Honor Jazz Ensemble has participated in the SCBDA Jazz Festival and students from his group have been selected for the SCBDA All-State Jazz Ensemble.

He is a member of Music Educators National Conference, the National Band Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, the South Carolina Band Directors Association and Pi Kappa Lambda. Sears has been a regular performer at Marathon Community Church, with the Latin/Salsa group “Caliente” and with the Ray Spires Big Band.  Dan enjoys spending time with his wife Joy and daughter Sarah.

Matthew Wofford
Director of Percussion Studies

 

Matthew Wofford is in his first year as the Director of Percussion Studies for Spartanburg County School District Five.  Mr. Wofford is from Wellford, SC and is a graduate of James F. Byrnes High School.  Mr. Wofford was awarded a Bachelor's of Music from the University of South Carolina in 2004.  While a student at USC, Mr. Wofford studied percussion under Dr. Scott Herring, Dr. Ed Nagle, and Dr. Chris Lee, and performed with the Symphonic Band, USC Symphony Orchestra, USC Percussion Ensemble, and the USC Escola de Samba.  Mr. Wofford has also performed with the South Carolina Symphonic Chorale.  Mr. Wofford was a South Carolina Teaching Fellow at USC as well. 

 

Before coming to District Five, Mr. Wofford was the percussion caption head for Gilbert High School, and Director of Percussion Studies and Assistant Director of Bands for Colleton County High School, in Walterboro, SC.  While at Colleton County, Mr. Wofford started the first Indoor Percussion Ensemble in school history, and won their class at the 2006 SCBDA Winter Ensemble Championships, the first ever state title in that school’s history.


Mr. Wofford is a member of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA), and the Percussive Arts Society (PAS).  Mr. Wofford lives in Newberry, South Carolina with his wife, Elizabeth. 

 

Gary Frye
Marching Instructor

 

Gary Frye graduated from Byrnes High Scholl in 1991.    He was a member of the Rebel Regiment from 1987 – 1991.   He enlisted in the United States Air Force after high school and served as an AeroMedical Evacuation Technician from 1991 – 1994. 

 

Mr. Frye worked as a member of the Rebel Regiment staff as marching instructor from 1994 – 2001.   During this time the Rebel Regiment won 6 state championships, 8 upper state championships, 4 BOA class championships, and 1 BOA regional championship.

 

Mr. Frye worked  as a member of the Greenville Memorial Hospital Emergency Trauma Team from 1996 – 2001.  After 9/11/01, he re-enlisted in the Air Force and has been working as a Crew Chief on the F-16 Fighter Planes. 

 

While stationed in San Antonio, Texas, he worked with the Winston Churchill Marching Band and the Ronald Reagan Marching Band as the Marching Tech instructor.   During this time these bands made the finals show at the BOA Grand National Championships. 

 

His second enlistment has ended and we are very happy to have Mr. Frye back with us in Duncan, South Carolina.
